Nothing is worse than getting smacked with a virus that threatens to take out you and your entire house hold.

While it feels nearly impossible to avoid this time of year, there are some time tested remedies that we can easily implement into our everyday lives to help reduce our chances of illness, or at the very least reduce the severity and duration. Let's delve into some immune boost naturally tips!

In addition to the obvious things we all know to do, such as washing our hands regularly, getting good quality sleep, eating a balanced diet and keeping unhealthy choices to a minimum here are a few “old wives tales” that can be added into the rotation.

Using simple things that you likely already have around your home to help boost your health and tackle this winter with wellness on your side.

Many of these we’ve been told to do since we were little, but have you ever really wondered if they work?

They do! - and here’s why:

  • Chicken Soup: A time-honored remedy that  provides warmth and nourishment, while also helping to reduce inflammation and ease congestion. It strengthens our gut health and boosts our immune system. Homemade is best! Even if it’s purchased, there are a lot of ready made foods that provide an immune boost available from local cooks!

  • Honey's Soothing Elixir: A persistent cough can become an unwelcome distraction. Harness the natural healing power of honey, known for its antibacterial properties, to calm your throat and silence your cough. Choosing a local organic honey guarantees the best quality and most beneficial effects from your local bees.

  • Nightstand Companion: Onion in Water: While it might sound unconventional, placing a sliced onion in a bowl of water on your nightstand can help alleviate congestion and soothe your breathing during the night. The natural compounds in onions can act as decongestants.

As Summer approaches and our days get filled with making memories it's easy to go about our days without much consideration of anything else. In a time of increased outdoor activities, travel, and consumption of energy, water, and resources, sustainability may not be our first thought. However, it is important to be mindful of the overall impact on the environment and take steps to reduce our carbon footprint.

6 Tips to be more sustainable this Summer

1. Reduce Energy Consumption: As temperatures rise during the summer months, people use more energy to keep their homes cool. You can commit to sustainable practices by turning off lights, unplugging electronics when not in use, and keeping you AC at a reasonable level.

2. Conserve Water: Water is a precious resource, and it's especially important to conserve it during the hot summer months. Maintain summer sustainability by fixing leaky faucets, taking shorter showers, and watering your lawn and garden in the early morning or late evening to reduce evaporation.

3. Reduce Waste: Summer is a time of barbecues, picnics, and outdoor activities, which often generate a lot of waste. Reduce your waste by using reusable plates, cups, and utensils, bringing your own reusable water bottles, bags, and composting food scraps.

4. Use Sustainable Transportation: Summer is a great time to get outside and explore but driving alone in a car can have a significant impact on the environment. Consider using sustainable transportation options such as walking, biking, or taking public transportation.

5.Support Local Farmers: Eating locally grown fruits and vegetables is not only healthy but also supports sustainable agriculture practices. Visit your local farmers' market to buy fresh, locally grown produce and reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation and refrigeration of imported produce.

6. Choosing Sunscreen: Traditional sunscreens contain chemicals that can be harmful to coral reefs and marine organisms. Sustainable sunscreens, on the other hand, use mineral-based ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that do not harm the ocean. These sunscreens also typically come in eco-friendly packaging and may be cruelty-free and vegan. When choosing a sustainable sunscreen, look for products that are labelled as "reef-safe," "ocean-safe," or "biodegradable." It's important to protect our skin from the harmful effects of the sun, but we can also do so in a way that is responsible and sustainable.
